In Western medical and philosophical contexts there is an ongoing debate concerning persons who are in VS (vegetative state, now also called 'unresponsive wakefulness syndrome'; Laureys et al. 2010). These persons have irreversibly lost the capacity for consciousness but retain some autonomic functions, such as unaided breathing.
