At a more philosophical level, it has been argued that the default position of not withdrawing artificial nutrition and hydration should be reversed: Insofar as there is no evidence that VS patients have a “compelling interest in being kept alive,” we “commit a worse violation of autonomy” by maintaining them alive than by not doing so (Constable 2012, 157, 160).
