Such remarks highlight the limits of neurocorrelational research, which is by definition unable to fulfill its own stated goal of differentiating between causes and consequences. By the end of the decade, neither the updated version of the same review (Davidson, Pizzagalli, and Nitschke 2009) nor any of the brainrelated articles in the new International Encyclopedia of Depression (Ingram 2009) offered a different view or evidence of progress toward the longedfor knowledge of causes and causal mechanisms.
