Influence of psychoanalytic explanations

The neurodiversity movement is historically connected to a turn away from psychoanalysis and toward a neurobiological and genetic understanding of autism. Especially in the United States, from the 1940s to the mid-1970s, psychoanalytic explanations were paramount both in psychiatric theory and clinical practice (Nadesan 2005).
